How Does Your Carbon Footprint Look Like?
December 5, 2016     |    Clean Energy Business    |    Posted by: Rich Price
Everyone on the planet contributes to Climate Change. Climate Change is the change in the average temperature of Earth. This poses a great threat to our planet because its effects are devastating and may affect our lives. Polar caps melting in the arctic regions, extinction of certain animal species, and increased in temperature during Summer are some of the effects Climate Change. And Climate Change is caused by a lot of factors; mainly carbon footprint.

Carbon footprint is defined as the total emission of greenhouse gas of someone or something. The most common form would be the smoke emissions of factories. Little do we know, each of us has our carbon footprint. A lot of us aren’t aware of this fact and continue to increase their carbon footprint with each passing day.
In short, we are contributing to the destruction of our planet! In 2001, the United States is the biggest contributor of carbon footprint in the world. The average carbon emissions in the US is 28.6 t CO2e. Wealthy countries tend to have a higher average measure of carbon emissions than smaller countries. Their consumption of the natural resources plays an important role in their carbon footprint.
What are the factors that increase our carbon footprint?
Travelling

Travelling is essential in our everyday lives. Driving to and from work, driving towards restaurants, traveling on a vacation, all of these are a factor in your carbon footprint. The smoke your car emits contain carbon dioxide which causes greenhouse gasses.

A better way to reduce your carbon footprint is to use public transportation. It reduces carbon dioxide emission by a lot. If you don’t want to use public transportation, there’s always the option of carpooling with other people.

Food

Believe it or not, what you eat also contributes to your carbon emissions. It takes a lot of resources to raise cows and other animals. 13% of the greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation and production of food. In order to help reduce them, eat locally-produced and organic food. Organic food will greatly reduce your carbon footprint.

Waste Management

Are you fond of throwing trash everywhere? If you are, you are contributing a lot to the destruction of our planet. Not only does it look unappealing and ugly to others, it can also cause health issues if garbage is not disposed of properly.

Follow the 3Rs: Reuse, Reduce, Recycle. It is important to recycle products because it helps reduce the amount of waste being thrown and also prevents pollution. It also conserves a lot of our natural resources, which in turn reduce the emission of greenhouse gasses.

Energy Usage

You might not be aware but your carbon footprint starts at home. Are you using electricity efficiently? Do you leave your electronics plugged on even when you’re not using them? Little things such as those will contribute in making your carbon footprint big. You are wasting so much energy! Not only your electric bill will surge up but also your carbon footprint.

Try using energy efficient lighting such as bulbs. Energy-saving appliances are also a good addition to your home. Turn off the lights and other appliances when they’re not in use.

One of the best ways to reduce your carbon footprint is to convert your energy consumption into an environment-friendly one. With solar panels, you can do this by powering your home with 100% solar energy.
